24-year-old woman dies after collapsing in final stages of New York City Marathon

Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old former college field hockey player, died after collapsing in Central Park during the final stages of the New York City Marathon. Her father, Steve Apa, stated she was in perfect shape and running for the Parkinson’s Champions team. The Pennsylvanian had texted her father shortly before collapsing two miles from the finish line. She was later pronounced dead at a New York hospital, with the cause of death identified as rhabdomyolysis.
