More than half of local election candidates suffered abuse in 2026

The Electoral Commission reports a serious increase in abuse and intimidation against local and mayoral election candidates in England. In 2026, 55 per cent of candidates encountered abuse, rising from 47 per cent the previous year. Women, disabled people, and those from minority ethnic backgrounds are most frequently targeted. Candidates from Labour and Reform UK were particularly affected. This surge in threats is now significantly altering political behaviour and remains a growing concern for the commission.
